American Defender Concepts is our all-inclusive art that is made up of every module that we teach. It is designed for the person that wants long term training. To find out more about each module feel free to click on the course descriptions for all our courses on the courses page. We also have it set up in case you haven't noticed so the About Us link also comes to this page. I want to take this opportunity to tell you about what we do and why we do it.
As with most people in this field i got my start in traditional martial arts. In the last 15 years i began to notice huge flaws in what i was seeing. Martial arts to me became more about empowerment and less about self defense. When you look at the actual fight science you will see what i mean.
You see you can learn mechanics of how to move but in the end without training your body how to handle stress and training under stress it's no good.  If you don't train under stress and then have to deal with sudden extreme stress your body will react accordingly no matter how long you stand punching at air in the mirror. However if you train under this stress then an odd thing happens. It's no longer stressful and you can control what yourself under stress.
We don't believe in flashy complicated moves. If you want to know how to fight. We believe gross motor is the way to go. We keep fine motor movements to a bare minimum in our courses. Sure you can be able to do fine motor movements in a streetfight if you practice for years. What if you don't have years? What if you need it now? Years ago when i did traditional martial arts i had an instructor tell me that it took years of training to perfect a move that they were teaching that night. So if i could attacked before then should I tell the attacker to come back in a few years when I'm ready? Of course not. This is why gross motor is the way to go. Alot of these techniques can be perfected in one day and they really work!
We also use the term solution based martial arts. So what does that mean? Well, basically it means exactly what it says. Alot of courses out there today are just updated versions of outdated martial arts. Alot of these well meaning people do what Marc Macyoung and others talk about. Finding ingenious solutions to nonexistent problems. You spend years learning some type of form then at the end try to figure out the attack that goes with it. Does that make sense to you? Because it sounds backwards to me. The idea of solution based martial arts is that we said to hell with the past. We studied assaults as they actually took place with police interviews, victim interviews, even attacker interviews. In the case of women's self defense we also did alot of studying with human resources workers. I also drew from my own experiences with assaults as well as work in the fields of security and personal protection. We believe you can't develop a good solution for a problem you don't completely understand. We understand this could be someone's life on the line so what we do has to work and we make sure that it does. This is American Defender Concepts
